Release Notes

Welcome to Azure Storage Explorer 6 Preview 3

This is the third release of the latest Azure Storage Explorer, code-named Phoenix. update: .vhd files are uploaded as page blobs

What's New?

Here are some important things to know about version 6:

Open Source
  • Now being run as a full open source project.
  • Full source code on CodePlex.
  • Collaboration encouraged!
Updated Code Base
  • Brand-new code base (WPF/C#/.NET 4.5)
  • Visual Studio 2013 solution (previously VS2010)
  • Uses the Task Parallel Library (TPL) for asynchronous background operations
  • InstallShield LE setup project (previous MSI projects, no longer supported by Microsoft)
  • Updated user interface
Updated for Microsoft Azure
  • Uses latest Microsoft Azure SDKs including Storage Client for .NET v4.0
  • Developer storage working again (it had stopped working in prior versions due to cloud platform changes).
  • Configurable Microsoft Azure endpoints (to support China data centers).
  • Support for newer cloud platform features such as CORS.

About Preview 3: Queue Support and Expanded Blob and Table Features

Preview 3 supports blob, queue, and table operations. Azure Storage Explorer 6 is now full-featured enough that we're making it the default version for download.

In Preview 1 we added blob support.:
  • Create / Delete Containers
  • Set Container Access Level / Generate Shared Access Signatures / Set CORS Rules
  • Create / Copy / Delete Blobs
  • View/Edit Block Blobs and Page Blobs
In Preview 2 we added table support and other improvements:
  • Create / Delete Tables
  • Create / Update / Copy / Delete Entities
  • Query Entity List by up to three columns and conditions
  • Filter Entity List by by max rows, search text, and other criteria
  • Sort Entity List by any column, ascending or descending
  • Download entities to CSV (Excel), JSON, or XML format
  • The Blob List now also has a filter function
  • Error messages now stack at the bottom of the screen, just as background tasks do
  • A variety of UI improvements, including blob/table list view styling
In Preview 3 we added queue support and expanded on some of the earlier features:
  • Create / Delete Queues
  • List Queue Messages
  • Pop top Queue Message / Create or Copy a Queue Message
  • Added a configurable Content Type table that sets ContentType when files are uploaded to blob storage
  • Improved container blob listings to include all artifacts
  • Added ability to upload table entities (CSV, JSON, XML)
Since this is new software, please exercise appropriate levels of caution and don't take chances with your data. Be sure to back-up any critical or non-replaceable cloud data.

Preview 3 doesn't know how to import account settings from earlier versions of Azure Storage Explorer or other storage tools, so you'll need to enter your storage account names and keys. By the way, it's fine to run Azure Storage Explorer 6 side-by-side with an earlier version.

Reviews for this release

Please, stop trying to fetch the whole data when selecting a table (Table Storage)! It seems ridiculous! Tables may be quite large, and usually you just want to run a query! Please, this is important!

You need to NOT load the entire Azure Storage Table when someone clicks on it. It's like reading an entire database when accessing it.

I was looking forward to using this app to export the tables in my storage account and then import them into another storage account. However, the application is unusable with larger tables (my largest one is a few tens of thousands of rows), it crashes when I just select my table in the tree. Also tried using version 4 because it seemed more stable, but I can't export more than 1000 rows and filtering just doesn't work.

Deletion of accounts is clunky. for instance, if you had delete the storage account in Azure and now you want to delete it in Azure Storage Explorer, you cannot just select it and remove-it tries to connect to it causing a not responding app. Also once it times out, the bad account is highlighted but it actually deletes the account below it- which is what you do not want deleted

This tool is the most useful and awesome piece of software I've downloaded this year! I'm going to release a Windows Store app soon that uploads and downloads image blobs, XML and table entities. The app is for handicapped children and having this tool gives me many ways to test my app, see what's going on, and gives me the confidence to release to the market. A giant thank you to David Pallmann! I owe ya!

Good tool! I have an issue to report on windows 8.1. When I delete an azure account the app crashes.

When I downloaded the .zip file to install, Norton warned me abput the file and detect it as malware with High Risk. Threat name is: WS.Reputation.1

Very unstable. Bob downloads not working at all.

Great app, a few bugs though. When you save a filter as default, it does not save.

Could you please add the ability to rename blobs as windows doesn't let us include forward slash / before we upload and this is a vital requirement for naming blobs in order to fake nested containers.

Unable to delete the selected storage account from the list. Try adding 3-4 storage account. now try removing 2nd storage account. the app tries to delete the first account in the list.

Very useful tool thanks!

As others have said, completely fails to deal with large tables. Anything over around 10k rows brings to app grinding to a halt.
by ianstapleton on Mar 10, 2015 at 8:50 AM
Great tool! Hope to see a few more bug fixes addressed. Two issues to report: 1) the application crashes when trying to remove an account. 2) Querying a full entity, potentially when there are millions of rows of data, is definitely not a good feature/function. Other than that, keep up the good work!

Lightweight and does what I need for blob storage. It'd be nice to have more bells and whistles, such as "Delete" on the keyboard operating the Delete button and other hot keys. Thanks for putting this together!

I deal with large Azure storage tables. The tool consistently fails to load a table for querying. Please stop loading the whole table and limit it to the first few records or so (or provide a configurable setting) Other than that, looks good

Love this and all the previous versions, my only gripe with this version is that you cannot set metadata attributes to blobs.
by simlawstu on Jan 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM
Apparently the entire table is being read when I select it in the tree! This is very bad and makes it completely unusable.

The good: Everything I've used has worked fairly well. Nice tool, I like the layout and functionality. Good work, and it is definitely appreciated. The bad: When viewing LARGE objects you attempt to retrieve EVERYTHING before displaying it, I get it, I understand, BUT I have tables and containers with MILLIONS of rows. I can't browse those containers at all. I suggest implementing paging of some sort or at least give an option to only pull X entries(entities). That alone would mitigate the problem. Next steps: Implement Files.

Well, 1 point. DateTime display with my current Windows settings, and can't be saved.

This is very useful tool. It's great that you are developing it. CORS support is much appreciated.

Was able to copy between blobs in different regions as long as I made them public blobs. Did have a bug issue. When I deleted an Azure storage container but didn't yet remove from Storage Explorer. If I try to connect to the deleted blob from SE it eventually times out, but when I select "Remove" SE bombs.

1. Downloading blobs does not work -- it says download began, but nothing really happens. 2. UI freezes when I click on containers until the list of blobs is downloaded. 3. Account keys on disk are encrypted with the Rijndael cipher, but the encryption key is right there in the source. This is hardly better than storing them in clear text. Actually, it is worse, since it gives you false sense of security. Windows has a built-in facility for storing secured data: in .NET it is System.Security.Cryptography.ProtectedData class.

great tool. extremely useful and educational as well
by cicorias on Oct 17, 2014 at 4:28 PM
Otherwise awesome update, but I can't look up at any tables that have thousands of lines in them. It freezes for a while then gives System.OutOfMemoryException. Also I think it shouldn't automatically query all data in a table when you click it. It can take a long time and often isn't what you want to do.

Best Azure Blob Storage explorer !! :) Maybe a progress bar visible when we downloading big files ? Good job :)
by JulienStroheker on Oct 3, 2014 at 9:16 PM
Great new features overall, but unfortunately "Download Selected Blobs" doesn't work for me and some other users. I'll use this new version for most operations and will use an older release for downloading.
